Underwood Crafts lays hedges in both Derbyshire and Midland styles. Providing a wonderful wildlife habitat it also provides a barrier for stock as well as rejuvenating a neglected old hedge.
Derbyshire-Sawn stakes positioned approx. 3' apart, top trimmed to 4'. Slightly narrower than Midland with no binders on top.
Midland Style-Coppiced Stakes placed at 18" intervals and taller, standing at 4'6". The top is bound to create a strong boundary.
I lay hedges from late September through to the end of February.

We predominantly use Sweet Chestnut for this traditional and very durable fencing. Split/cleft using axes and wedges these fences can be made with between 2-4 rails per bay. No need to use any preservatives these look great as estate fencing or large scale garden fencing with its natural curves and twists.
Other options include broad pale fencing with either Sweet Chestnut or Oak and gates are made to match as well with a variety of designs available.
Gate hurdles are also available in a variety of sizes.
We can either supply the materials for you to put it up as well as install ourselves.
Made from locally sourced Sweet Chestnut this attractive and durable fencing is hand split and shaped using traditional tools and methods. Installed it will last a minimum of 20 years outlasting any tanalised fencing and always looks great with its natural twists and bends.
These traditional fences can be made with 2, 3 or 4 rails depending on requirements and needs. In addition broad cleft Chestnut pales can be nailed to the horizontal trials to create a unique beautiful style of fencing. Gates are made to match also using Chestnut.
